Castello Conti winery was founded in Maggiora, in the province of Novara, in the northern part of Piedmont, in 1963, by Ermanno Conti, who took up his uncle Pietro legacy, giving it a new and important impulse. In 1969, in order to reward the historical wine tradition of that area, was established the DOC Boca, for wines composed of Nebbiolo (at least 70%), Vespolina and Uva Rara, and Ermanno, who owned just over 3 hectares, embraced with conviction this new denomination, becoming one of the protagonists. Boca, even before its official recognition, has always been a wine characterized by the almost sharp crispness of Nebbiolo grape which, in such cold lands, gives wines great freshness, nobility and elegance. According to some historical sources the wines of that area were renowned since at least 1300 and, in the 16th century, the Spanish troops, who headed to occupy Milan through the Piedmontese lands, received regular supplies of wine from the Boca hills. In the mid-90s Elena, Anna and Paola Conti, daughters of Ermanno, entered the company inheriting from their father the same tension towards a quality production, still preserved with dedication and commitment. Their first important initiative was the creation of the label “Il Rosso delle Donne” in 1996, a wine that represents the summation of the winery’s productive thinking about Boca. This Boca DOC wine consists of Nebbiolo with small percentages of Vespolina and Uva Rara, from two vineyards, Motto and Cappelle, 450 meters above sea level, on soils rich in volcanic red porphyry. After the harvest, the grapes are destemmed and then pressed, before fermenting spontaneously, with their indigenous yeasts, without temperature control. The obtained wine, then, rests for 3 years in large barrels, before being bottled with a minimum addition of sulphites (sometimes completely absent). This vintage 2006, showed immediately a great vitality, despite the 10 years of aging in bottle. The wine, with a pale ruby color, almost garnet, smelled of wild blackberry, black cherry granite, blood orange, floral potpourri, cinnamon, black pepper, wax and incense, with balsamic and vinyl echoes. The mouthfeel, characterized by great freshness and sapidity, has been enriched with a perfect taste-olfactory correspondence with tannin from the fine grain to accompany the sip until a ripe red fruit and sweet spices finish.
